WHY STUDENTS FAIL
MATHEMATICS
Mathematics is believed to be the key for all
other subjects but it is surprising that most students fail it and yet pass
other subjects. There is no work that you can do without applying mathematics.
Consider an individual walking from his home to work in the city, he has in mind how long it is from his home to the place of work and what time he takes to arrive at work and he therefore use mathematics to survive the challenge of travelling and arriving on time.
Consider an individual walking from his home to work in the city, he has in mind how long it is from his home to the place of work and what time he takes to arrive at work and he therefore use mathematics to survive the challenge of travelling and arriving on time.
The question now is why do students fail
mathematics?
I
think students only fail the class room mathematics but they have often applied
mathematics in their daily lives to solve problems. The following are some of
the reasons students fail mathematics:
- Negative
attitude towards mathematics. Hence studying other subjects more than
mathematics.
- Fear
due to pressure from friends that mathematics is hard. Failure of the
teachers to give proper and simple explanation of mathematical terms.
- Limited
or even lack of learning materials by the students. Consider a student who
is going for a lesson on bearing without drawing materials, this student
can hardly get anything and yet mathematics needs practice.
- Lack
of enough practice by the students.
- Failing
to do mathematics homework also contributes to the failure in mathematics.
Having a good practice helps in getting familiar with mathematics
questions.
6. Having a negative attitude towards your teacher
also contributes to the failure of many students. It makes one not to
concentrate on what the teacher is teaching.
7. Some foundational topics which you did not
understand or you were not taught at all can affect your understanding of the
current topics.
8. When you don’t read and understand the
instructions in each section, you stand the risk of failing the exam, because NO
INSTRUCTION, NO EXAM.
HOW
TO OVERCOME THEM
[A] ALWAYS REMIND YOURSELVES OF THE FOLLOWING:
1. Mathematics concepts never change and will
never change, considering other subjects.
2. The way of solving mathematics is always the
same. it has the same answers all through and the answers will never change.
3. Mathematics formulas are always the same and do
not change at any instance.
4. Mathematics exams test the same thing every
year. By understanding the concepts of Mathematics is always a guarantee to
pass the exam.
5. Always make it a point of duty to solve at
least 5 mathematics problems in a day.
6. Do not keep quiet when you don’t understand a concept.
